Skullmapping is an artistic collective run by Filip Sterckx and Antoon Verbeeck. By using 3D projection mapping techniques, and a profound artistic knowledge, Skullmapping tells stories with stunning bespoke visuals. The team creates projections on buildings, in boxes, on shapes or simply on the ground and adds extra dimensions, optical illusions, and notions of movement onto previously static objects.
“Since we are using miniature chefs and a lot of fine detail, high resolution is very important for us. Optoma’s UHZ65 projectors were perfect as they are 4K, laser and have the right amount of lumens at an affordable price."
Birgit Sterckx, 3D-Artist at Skullmapping
"...the laser light source means they can be mounted vertically to project down onto the table. This is important, since if we were mounting lamp based projectors vertically it might shorten the projectors’ lifespan.”

The Challenge

In spring 2018 Skullmapping, creators of Le Petit Chef, started working on a new dining show, exclusively created for Celebrity's new cruise ship 'Edge', called 'Le Petit Chef and friends'.

This show is a cooking competition between four tiny chefs, so aside from Le Petit Chef, there's also a Spanish chef Maria, an Italian chef Luciano and a Japanese chef Takahiro.

Each chef prepares one dish, and for each course the table is transformed to a setting related to the nationality of the chef whose turn it is to cook. When the Japanese chef cooks for example, the table is transformed into a pond with cherry blossom petals and Koi fish swimming around. When Maria cooks we see Gaudi patterns projected.

The actual dishes served to diners look exactly the same as the ones prepared by the projected chefs. At the end the audience gets to choose which chef wins the competition. The chef that gets the loudest and most enthusiastic applause comes out to receive a golden chef's hat.

Each table has its own Optoma UHZ65 laser 4K UHD projector which is integrated into the ceiling of the restaurant (so invisible to the audience).

The restaurant called 'Le Grand Bistro' has a maximum capacity of 80 persons and is located at the heart of the ship.

Birgit Sterckx, 3D-Artist at Skullmapping, said: “Since we are using miniature chefs and a lot of fine detail, high resolution is very important for us.  Optoma’s UHZ65 projectors were perfect as they are 4K, laser and have the right amount of lumens at an affordable price.

“Also the laser light source means they can be mounted vertically to project down onto the table. This is important, since if we were mounting lamp based projectors vertically it might shorten the projectors’ lifespan.”

Equipped with high-quality laser illumination, the UHZ65 4K UHD projector provides consistent brightness, superior colour performance, instant on/off and an extraordinary life span of up to 20,000 hours.

Capitalising on the fast switching speed of the DLP chip with XPR technology and advanced image processing, 8.3 million pixels are delivered to the screen without alignment issues, with four times as many pixels as 1080p. This brings stunningly detailed, bright and colourful imagery to the screen.

With its sleek black casing and 3,000 lumens, the UHZ65 also boasts sophisticated PureMotion frame-interpolation technology. This advanced processing eliminates motion blur or image judder, even in high-speed action films or fast-paced sports.

Installation is simple with vertical lens shift, 1.6x zoom and a host of connection options such as two HDMI ports and Mobile High-Definition Link (MHL) for compatible phones and tablets.
