The Challenge

Challenge

Hertswood Academy in Borehamwood recently transformed with the construction of a new world-class Academy building, which opened in September 2019.

The new building saw the Academy consolidate the existing upper and lower sites into a single, state-of-the-art educational and communal facility. It was created with the ambition to ensure students, teachers, and the wider community would have an exceptional environment to develop and learn in, with access to the best technology available.

As part of the new-build, Hertswood Academy required a visually impressive digital signage solution in two of their large open areas - the double-height atrium, and restaurant.

Steven Wainwright, Network Manager at Hertswood Academy, explained: "We had a short window to complete the works. The building was available to us only from the start of the summer holidays, and the system needed to be working for the students' return at the start of September. The areas involved are double-height, so access equipment was required. Lots of other works were underway at the same time, so time management was crucial."

He added: "These areas are both high in ambient light, presenting an obvious challenge for projection."

Solution

Hertswood Academy approached XMA and partner company CTBO who recommended Optoma projectors for the solution.

As part of Optoma's ProDesign service, Optoma UK's Technical Specialist, Ross Noonan, visited the site to specify a suitable solution that would combat the ambient lighting and fill the space sufficiently.

Ross Noonan said: "After seeing photographs of the site, I advised that we visit the Academy and undertake a site survey to ensure the projectors would be right for the environment. Using the Optoma ZU1050's constant lumens feature, we were able to simulate 8,000 and 6,000 lumens to test whether the ZU660, ZU850, or ZU1050 would be appropriate."

Ross proposed three Optoma ZU1050 projectors for their incredible 10,000 lumens brightness and longer-lifetime laser light source. The feature-packed projectors also offer advanced installation options including HDBaseT, lens shift, four corner correction and 360° positioning in any direction. In addition to, horizontal and vertical lens shift and 1.6x optical zoom, allowing for quick and accurate installation.

Two ZU1050s with A06 lenses were mounted side-by-side to create a magnificent 9 x 2.9m image in the atrium. The other ZU1050 took centre stage in the restaurant, using an A06 lens to project an impressive 4.5 x 2.9m image.

Steven Wainwright manually aligned the double-width image in the atrium and explained, "I am very pleased with the functionality of the projectors to manipulate the image's position and size through the motorised lens shift, which allows me to keep them conveniently aligned without any software management."

To drive the digital signage on the projectors, Steven chose Planet eStream as the cloud-based solution.

Results

Steven has been very complimentary of the solution saying, "The projectors provide a very eye-catching display to visitors as they first enter the Academy. As time goes on, the devices will serve as a critical method to us for communicating messages and reminders to students, as well as providing them with inspiring video content. We also expect to offer use of the solution as part of our lettings offering, to those who might wish to hire out spaces in the Academy.

"Our Headteacher and Governors are incredibly pleased with the solution, and are full of ideas for content which can be displayed!"
